Sad but interesting that Mary was portrayed as having loved him dearly probably due to her having a positive childhood with him and chasing that relationship for the rest of her life, even when he was cruel. Elizabeth on the other hand was too young to remember and was colder to him and didn't seem too terribly shaken up at his death. Elizabeth saw him for who he was. Mary saw him as who she wanted him to be.

In that moment of Mary’s tears he saw he was loved beyond his vain acts and accepted all that was coming to him. He knew he deserved anything that happened. He realized he was loved by every woman he loved and the one that lived proved it. Beyond mistreatment she didn’t want him to go. He realized he killed true love through the years and knew death was coming, not to collect but to rectify.
