It’s about developing a deeper understanding. Math is not just a process it a way of thinking

Wow. No wonder so many younger people are unable to do math in their heads.

My friend Tia told me they taught her math in school with dots. As a result she "can't math" in her head because she "runs out of dots." She's 31 now i think. The lack of math ability among people her age and younger blows my mind. I had a supervisor that used the calculator on his iPhone to calculate 867-100. It's not like he was doing a bunch of calculations and that was just the next one. He had to take it out of his pocket and remove a glove just for 867-100. I called him out on it... "Seriously dude? You're using a calculator for that? You know what? I'm in charge now." What makes it even funnier is that he graduated university and was part of an executive training program.😅😂😢

That's good. It shows he really understood the concept of addition.

They're actually doing the same thing. The kid is just over-explaining it. But explaining what's going on is common core - good for understanding concepts but bad at just doing math efficiently.

Actually I think indian maths syllabus is better than American maths syllabus 😅

That is pretty good, he doesn't seem to fully get it yet , but understanding that a 1 in the tens place is 1 group of ten, is much better than simply following an algorithm that gives you the answer without any understanding of why. Needs to be combined with the method of adding right to left instead of left to right. Which allows you to do things like 47+16 in your head easily by just saying 40 + 10 is 50, 50+7 is 57, 57+6 is 63. Works for arbitrarily large numbers.

Now I wanna see how this dude does multiplication. He must fill up the whole whiteboard with dots 💀

Some people are always looking for the most difficult way to do everything. Makes them feel smart.
