If you can’t afford to spend ~$300 on a set of cello strings (totally understandable), Jargar also makes an excellent Classic set for about $150! I have used a Classic Forte A and a Classic Medium D for years before switching over to the new and more expensive Evoke strings. Also, 30% with code jeremy30 will definitely help, link in my bio!

The more expensive one has a more vibrant sound in my opinion

In person, I can confirm the difference is enormous. I’ve recently gone from standard Larsens to Il Cannone Larsons, and both my teachers were amazed. The difference is huge. I recorded a comparison, like this, and you can’t hear it. In the room, or even my wife hearing my cello from several rooms away - night and day.

From this video I've learnt that expensive strings: 1. Make you more dramatic with your facial expressions and head movements 2. Make the colour of your clothes change 🤭🤣

I find if you play lower dynamics (pianissimo and below), smooth legato phrases and focus especially on the 2 lower strings...then cheap strings can be really hard to get control over, they can be a bit "chaotic", especially with a cheap bow and cheap strings. However I am not a professional cellist, I'm a multi-instrumentalist and long time musician, so just wanted to share my own experience with bowed string instruments here. 🎻😊

I guess the first one sounds thicker, and second sounds more silky smooth.

The expensive ones sounded much fuller and the tone was a little better in my opinion, however it also depends on how the string is on the cello so if he likes the feel of it when he presses it down. 😊

If I were in person, I could. You can’t hear the finer details in sound over a recording. The recording doesn’t capture much of anything that makes the strings different.
