I learned this the hard way when my orchestra teacher was acting like a snob and I was busting my butt with an extremely cheap viola with a warped bridge and while it was being repaired she allowed me to use her personal viola (which was amazing btw) and my whole section and orchestra teacher looked at me wide eyed. With the fixed bridge I was able to place regionally even on my cheapy cheap viola.
